Links
OK, this list could easily get a little overfacing - there are so many sites I think are worth visiting. Hopefully categorising them a bit will help.
Games
Here are links to places where you can download my favourite games (those that can be freely downloaded that is). Seriously, if you haven't, go and play them. They're classics.
-
Yes, my favourite game is a text adventure. I really can't stress enough how great this game is. It isn't easy, but it's well worth getting into.
-
Another adventure game, this time with graphics, Beneath A Steel Sky is a post-apocalyptic masterpiece.
-
iD's iconic FPS works surprising well as a roguelike. It's lots of fun.
-
Alternatively, if you prefer your roguelikes to be a bit more traditional, Nethack is a classic. Incredibly addictive and really difficult, despite the simple graphics, it never gets old
Games Sites
-
Caiman is a site with downloads for loads of freeware games for Windows. -
This is where you find games for Linux, funnily enough. Baf's Guide to the Interactive Fiction Archive
This is the best place to find interactive fiction.
DS Homebrew Sites
-
This is a site with a pretty sizable collection of homebrew downloads.
-
The blog here's updated regularly. It's a good place to keep up with developments in the homebrew world.
-
You can play Doom on your DS!
-
Quake too!
-
Portable Crayon Physics! It's still heavily in development, but loads of fun.
Game Making Programs
I tried making games with these before I got into programming, but I never finished one. They're good programs to use, especially if programming games from scratch looks a bit overfacing.
The Official Hamster Republic Role Playing Game Construction Engine
It's fairly simple to use, it's open source, it runs on Linux and Windows and it's got a pretty active community. What's not to love? If you want to make RPGs, this is the tool to go for.
-
This one's for making point-and-clicks. It's not really something I got into, but if it's something you want to do, AGS is a good place to start.
List of Game Creation Resources
It's a pretty good list. There ought to be something there for you to use.
Free Software
-
You thought Windows was your only option? It isn't. Linux is a free, open source operating system. I'm using it right now. It's really not as scary as all that.
-
This site does what it says on the tin, points you in the direction of open source alternatives to software.
Programming
These links lead to the sites of various programming languages. If you're serious about making games, you probably should give one of these a go.
